We perform precision agriculture projects over 3 to 4 years. The aim of the project is defined with the farmer (yield/quality optimisation) and the knowledge he has of his fields. Once optimisation has occurred over the 3-4 years project, little accompaniment is provided to the farmer (data collection) to ascertain optimisation efficiency.
During the first part of the project, we select relevant data to collect in the fields based on our scientific experience. We perform analysis of data and integration to provide enhanced yields and/or quality products. We select data without technological bias, ie we do not recommend a particular type of data or technology except multispectral imagery which is the basis for zone-based optimisation. Satellite data (NDVI) is used to obtain a broad vision of the situation (ie define the zones where optimisation is required), then we collect data related to crop stress (multispectral imagery) at defined timings depending on the weather pattern of the area/year. Multispectral imagery can be performed by UAV, plane or other means, given the fact that the imagery provider respects our defined timings and wavelengths/bandwidths. The timings depend on the crop considered and the weather (mostly temperature and precipitations). Our experience allows us to ascertain the collection of valuable data from crops which is the most important point to make sure correct optimisation of yield or quality is performed. Crops are biological systems and a deep knowledge of biological systems is required to provide efficient optimisations.
We analyse soil composition in selected locations based on collected imagery. The soil provides crops with nutrients and this analysis step is required at several timings during the season to make sure nutrients are not limiting factors to crop growth.
